The famous home, Falling Water, in Pennsylvania is so well known because of the man who designed the house and its furnishings, Frank Lloyd Wright. Buildings are more known for their architects that they are their builder.
That’s why I’ve been surprised that King David does not get more credit for building the first Temple in Jerusalem. In my devotions this week I’ve been reading the closing chapters of 1 Chronicles where David provides all the materials and designs for his son, Solomon to build a temple for God to live in. Yet that first Temple is always called “Solomon’s Temple.” Why? All Solomon did was, in effect, paint by numbers and do the work his father, David, commanded.
Then I came to this text, ““Every part of this plan,” David told Solomon, “was given to me in writing from the hand of the Lord.”” 1 Chronicles 28:19
David didn’t design the Temple, God gave David exact instructions.
That’s really the story of my life; I work, but God gives the increase. I plan, but God unfolds the story of my days. I dream, and God fulfills this dreams in himself.
I want to be like Abraham, who “was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.” Hebrews 11:10
