An alarming epidemic is arising among the Christian community, those who are called to be “Fishers of Men”. We have placed a “No Vacancy” sign on our time and our lives. We have lost sight of God’s calling for us to go out into the world and instead have created a world of our own. A world that is centered around Christian principles, but void of the main commission (Matt. 28:19). The epidemic is of eternal consequences for those who do not know God. Will we stop and reconsider our ways?
One of the greatest temptations for Christians, myself included, is to become our own little community. The community itself is a wonderful place. Yet many times the guests are few and ventures outside of the community are rare (ie: exclusive Christian activities such as: education, sports, camps, recreation, social life). Even believers with good intentions may be welcoming to unbelievers, but on our terms and in our territory. Christianity should be the exact opposite. Christ said to “go” and make room for the lost sharing heaven with them.
God has called you and I to a different lifestyle which extends way beyond my comfort and my desires. In fact, God wants us to live radically for Him. We need to stop using excuses such as: “They drink, they smoke, they swear, they are immoral, or their kids are a bad example”, and instead go exhibit the compassion of Christ and focus on what is important…. their souls. All the while remembering that someone faithfully spoke to a sinner such as you and I.
“And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present yo before Him holy and blameless beyond reproach-” Col. 1:20-21
Creating godly homes and Christian community is no error, yet ignoring the godless community is a vital mistake (sin) with tragic results for those we neglect. Today is a good day for us to remove the “No Vacancy” sign on our lives and rather be a walking “Welcome” sign to those who need us and the gospel.
