Enter through the front door of my home and it would not be unlikely for you to be greeted by at least one of my six children, either dressed in the latest hero costume or donning last nights evening wear (pajamas) and a new contemporary do (disheveled hair) About four steps into my home, you enter the heart of my home, the kitchen. More specifically, the central piece of furniture , the kitchen island where our guests gather. Countless holiday meals have been encased here, donuts with the early morning runners, kids parties gathered, bridal showers hosted, toddlers tea with crumpets, impromptu meals held, hearts consoled, feasts with foreigners, pizza inhaled by teens, and prayers over coffee. A pretty ordinary and familiar spot, yet something special happens here….you enter into the lives of another through the sharing of food.

I know that the food shared with others is significant. The blood, sweat, and tears behind hospitality is a little price in comparison to the value it has. Sharing of meals is a way that I can say “Hey, I consider you important and I am letting you come into my life and family.” What better way to express our love for another, then through inviting others to the intimate setting of meal time. Around our table you will connect with a cast of characters, where our lives will meet through our conversations.

We can learn from Christ’s example as He ate with many. He welcomed the sick and the sinner. Christ used the normal event of eating to express His love to others. Jesus had real conversations where lives were changed, people were encouraged, life lessons were taught, sins were addressed, and hope offered. He spoke to the issues that were important to the individual. Meals allowed an intimate time to meet with Christ.

John and I will continue to take the risk to let others take a peek into our crazy home as a way to show we care. The children will not be impeccable, or the parents perfect, or the food like Rachel Ray, but we will offer ourselves and our home to express our love for Christ and others.
